Make America AI Ready: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Recommendations

America’s AI lead is slipping—not from lack of models, but from a brittle compute supply chain and a 40% shortfall in H100-class GPUs by 2027, per federal projections. While the CHIPS Act funnels $52B into domestic fabs, the report warns that TSMC’s Arizona plant won’t hit 3 nm until 2028, leaving cloud providers dependent on Taiwan for next-gen training runs. The fix: a national AI reserve of 500,000 GPUs and a federally chartered “compute passport” to prioritize critical workloads.

The Trump administration has made artificial intelligence a centerpiece of its economic agenda, and one early piece of that effort is a free, seven-day text-message course from the Department of Labor (DOL) and private partner Arist called "Make America AI-Ready." The course, which frames itself as "your AI 101," is accessible, technically informative, and engaging. But a detailed analysis from Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP) identifies several weaknesses, including serious privacy contradictions, oversimplified quiz questions, and a notable absence of content about how AI is reshaping work.

What the course does well

The course's choice of SMS for delivery maximizes reach, requiring no app installation or account creation. The 10-minute-a-day pacing is practical. It consistently emphasizes that AI output must be checked and not blindly trusted, and it centers human responsibility — a quiz question about a coworker submitting an AI-generated report with fabricated statistics correctly returns that the human is responsible. The course is honest about AI's limitations, introducing the term "hallucination" clearly and explaining that AI predicts rather than knows or understands.

The privacy contradiction

The course contains a serious inconsistency regarding data privacy and security. On the last day, it advises users to "PROTECT your private info. Never share passwords, Social Security numbers, medical records, or confidential work data with AI tools." But earlier lessons had already prompted users to input some of these types of data. On Day 3, the course urges users to input a photo, PDF, or recording of their own voice. On Day 4, it calls it a "power move" to "give AI your own data to work with," including instructions to paste a resume and share monthly expenses. On Day 5, it suggests putting "medical symptoms" into AI. On Day 6, it tells users to share their address to find a restaurant.

The CITP analysis notes that AI tools can be more useful when they know more about you, so a blanket prohibition against sharing private information limits their usefulness. The recommendation is to move the privacy lesson earlier and include information about privacy settings such as temporary or incognito chats, rather than the "never share" language.

Quiz design and missing worker content

The quizzes adopt a right-wrong dichotomy, with questions consistently having one "obviously correct" answer that maps to the course's framing. Several wrong answers are absurd strawmen ("AI likes making things up to test you," "AI's internet connection was slow"). The CITP analysis recommends more open-ended questions that allow participants to grapple with issues relevant to their own skills.

For a course offered by the Department of Labor, there is very little content on the subject of work. The course frames AI solely as a productivity tool workers can use, largely skipping over how AI is already reshaping hiring, performance monitoring, and layoffs. An "AI 201" course could provide information on these topics, as well as bias, surveillance, and the concentration of power in large technology companies.

Commercial entanglements and AI-generated content

The DOL's press release points to a collaboration with a private partner called Arist. The CITP analysis notes that if the company co-developed actual course content using generative AI, this fact should be disclosed. Running selected course content through a detection tool suggested it was 100% AI-generated. The final lesson refers users to an Arist-sponsored AI summit featuring Tony Robbins and Dean Graziosi. While the summit appeared to be free, it raises questions about what other paid AI-enablement sessions or products these coaches might offer.

Bottom line

"Make America AI Ready" is a useful start on the journey to AI literacy for all Americans. But the privacy contradictions, oversimplified framing, and lack of worker-protection content are significant weaknesses that should be addressed in future versions. Transparency about how commercial partners are involved would also lend itself to wider adoption and trust.
